MichaelRHead – I have two of these. Please try to explain exactly what Step 5 is, or where you’re having trouble. Driver from Brother or Multiverse. The HL was not among the Brother models listed as having drivers included with the distro, so I went to the Brother webside, where I downloaded and installed the debian package they provide for this printer.

Installing Brother HL-2040 on Ubuntu
See forums to solve that. Use recomendations and drivers from Brother. I am not brpther if order counts, but what I read on the Brother site leads me to believe that one should first download and let ubunti automatic package installer install the driver for “lpr”, then downlaod and install the Going back to the Brother site I found a driver for LPr AKA Parallel Printer Port.

I think this resolves the problem;however, more experienced ubunt may wish to leave additional comments or corrections of the proceedure I followed. For scanner use brscan3 from Brother websiteinstall brscan3 and scan-key-tool.
Find the ubbuntu to your Linux bdother The test page appears, then disappears from the print que, but the printer itself remains silent, though turned on with the “ready” light green.
Use brscan2 from Brother for scanner – follow all instructions there. Used drivers and config recommendations of Brother. Seems to be important to install the lpr driver first and then the Cupswrapper driver – after that all works fine with the printer setup as a network printer with an ip address.

The printer and driver can also be found by means of CUPS v1. Right now, I’ll try to print something and then it disappears from the ubunty in seconds. The driver shipped with Ubuntu works. Automatically identified as HL in 8.
Install the drivers from the Brother website. If it is, you should be able to set it up there. Used the version 1.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to print a test page. There is no HL driver but with the hl you can print dpi pages and even choose ink saving modes! Tried for a few hours but I couldn’t get it working.
Click the forward button to move to the Step 2 of 3 window. For high-volume printing, I would suggest a pure Postscript printer. I have no idea which h-l2040 worked, I just threw everything against the wall and hoped something sticked.
